TAPE•79 Mojo Module Settings

The TAPE•79 Mojo Module is a stereo device that captures the essence of classic tape machines and magnetic tape.  It’s not modeled on any one particular tape machine, but embodies the mojo of our favorite decks from the 60’s, 70’s, and 80’s.  It functions as a stereo processor in the Silver Bullet mk2, but its two channels are independent of one another and can have different settings if desired.

There are two banks of switches on the board that allow you to customize how the module will affect your audio.  SW1 is for the left channel.  SW2 is for the right channel.  Set a switch towards the “ON” label to enable that particular setting.  If the switches are toggled towards the numbers on the side of the dipswitch housing, then those settings will be off or disabled.

Configuration

  • 1 – DISTORTION 1: Harmonic distortion created by overall tape level.  Defaut = ON
  • 2 – DISTORTION 2: Harmonic distortion of the tape dependent on the tape calibration EQ curve.  Default = ON
  • 3 – LF HEAD BUMP: Low frequency head bump characteristic of 15 ips tape.  Default = ON
  • 4 – HF FLAT: Enabling this setting defeats the high frequency peaking response of our virtual tape deck’s Repro EQ circuit.  Setting this to ON will give a flatter high frequency response.
  • 5/6 – IRON: Affects the perception of the amount of “iron” in the signal path, both in terms of the magnetic tape, and the input/output transformers of the tape decks we are emulating.  Setting these switches to ON will give more “iron” and thus more group delay throughout the signal path.  These switches should be operated as a pair if using blending in dry signal with the C-MIX knob.  Default = ON

Important Note:

If both IRON switches (5 and 6) are set in opposite directions, then there will be phase cancellations when the C-MIX knob is not all the way up at 100 (full CW).  This is a valid setting you may explore, but for absolute phase coherence set both IRON switches 5 and 6 in the same direction.
